916. (WILLIAM S. ROSECRANS) (1819-1898) Union major general who headed the Army of the Cumberland to gain a hard-won victory at Murfreesboro, only to be routed by Longstreet at Chickamauga. A good war-date green printed Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair pass, 1p. 12mo., issued by Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans bearing his personal hand stamp as the fair's president, [St. Louis, Mo., 1864] a season ticket, costing five-dollars and issued to a certain "T. T. Richards". Rosecrans never held a field command again after his defeat at Chickamauga and commanded the Department of Missouri eventually resigning two after the end of the war. Negligible crease, else very good. $75-100
