Description:

ROSE O'NEILL
(1874-1944) American illustrator and author, remembered for the chubby cherubs known as the Kewpies, whose sensational debut in Ladies Home Journal in 1909 later became a comic strip for The New York Times. So popular were the characters, that the Kewpis Doll was created in 1912, and is one of America's earliest collectible dolls. Scarce vintage I.S.P. 6" x 4 1/2" sepia, a dreamy pose taken by Gertrude Kasebier showing O'Neill in her younger years, boldy signed at bottom right in red pencil: "Your Rose my Jean". Very good.
