Description:

RONALD REAGAN
(1911 - 2004) Fortieth President of the United States who served for two terms (1981-1989) and contributed to the fall of European Communism. T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Los Angeles, Aug. 8, 1975, in part: '...I forgot to enclose a copy of my radio script on the Panama Canal and the address of the Committee in Washington...' Very good. The 1976 presidential elections proved to be a perilous time for negotiations on the return of control of the canal to Panama. While President Ford supported a Canal treaty, his primary opponent, Ronald Reagan, did not. The Democratic nominee for president, Jimmy Carter, also seemed to oppose a treaty. In an October debate with Ford, Carter vowed that he would not surrender 'practical control of the Panama Canal Zone any time in the foreseeable future.' Of course, in time Carter was convinced otherwise.
