Description:

RONALD REAGAN
(1911 - 2004) 40th President of the United States, previously served as Governor of California from 1967 to 1975 after a career as a Hollywood actor and trade union leader. REAGAN CALLS THE WATERGATE INVESTIGATION A ‘LYNCH ATTEMPT'. Great content A.L.S. ‘R R' as Governor on official letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Sacramento, [n.d.], in blue ink to a lady who had written asking Reagan for his views on Watergate. In part: ‘…First let me say those who committed the break in are guilty of an illegal act & I might add a very stupid act. Those who kept information concerning this act from the Pres. also behaved stupidly & did him great harm even though they were motivated by loyalty. In my opinion the Pres. has been completely truthful; he was not aware of what had been planned and knew nothing of the attempt to cover it up. Now however we are seeing a politically inspired effort to discredit him and by so doing to make it impossible for him to carry out the program he promised the voters in the last election. I am optimistic though & believe this lynch attempt by some elements of the press & the opposition party will fail...' Folds, else fine condition. Of course, Nixon became fully aware of the cover-up, and actively participated in it following the Watergate break-in.
