Description:

305. ERWIN J. ROMMEL (1891-1944) German field marshal whose Afrika Corps threw back repeated British and American assaults in North Africa, later he defended Normandy and ultimately was forced to commit suicide due to his implication in the Hitler bomb plot. Superb content signed mimeographed letter "Rommel" on "Commander German Afrika Corps" letterhead, 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d. but undoubtedly North Africa, June-July, 1942], a signed announcement issued in the wake of Rommel's stunning defeat of the British at Tobruk. In part: "...I receive innumerable greetings and good wishes from the Homeland, so much so that it is not possible for me to answer your greetings in a personal manner...this type of response [is] the only way to thank you. Newspaper reporters assigned to the German Africa Corps have recently shown many actions through word and photographs, many of which I could comment on. These give you a better picture of the Wehrmacht reports of achievements of all members of the German Africa Corps and also the climate, environment and unusual conditions which exist here. Let me assure you that the soldiers of the German Africa Corps will continue to fight until complete victory is achieved. Heil Hitler!" Folds, a bit weak at top, else very good. A superb letter written at the height of Rommel's North Africa campaign. $1,500-2,000
