Description:

Original first model "Universal" English-pattern folding view camera, manufactured by the Rochester Optical Co. from 1890-1892. The camera is fitted with a full plate (6 1/2" x 8 1/2") removable ground glass focusing screen in a spring-backed frame, with a mahogany body and black fabric bellows. It features a rack and pinion focusing mechanism, tilting back and a lens board capable of shifting up, down, and to the sides. Includes a brass-barreled lens of unknown focal length, engraved by the maker: "No. 1602 R. Walzl Balto. Md." The internal elements show dust and fungus but are still relatively clear. A celluloid maker's plaque is affixed beneath the lens board. No shutter mechanism is present, as originally designed. The focusing screen and lens board appear to be more modern replacements, and the body shows a few scratches and scuffs, else very good. Dimensions: approx. 12" x 10 1/4" x 10 1/4" open, 10 1/4" x 10 1/4" x 3" folded. Includes a second brass lens mounting ring and a second, smaller focusing screen for a different model view camera
