Description:

ROBLEY D. EVANS
(1946-1912) "Fighting Bob Evans", Rear Admiral who served in the Civil and Spanish-American Wars. Fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Washington, Nov. 27, 1899, to William Conant Church of the Army and Navy Journal, in part: "...My attention has been called to your article in your issue of Nov. 25, entitled 'Admiral Schley and his Cruise', in which the following occurs: 'We are told, however, that Captain Robley D. Evans has drawn charges against him and has held them for some time, but so far has not presented them to the Secretary, though they have been shown to sympathize in the attack on Admiral Schley. It remains to be seen whether they will be presented to the Departments'. It seems only fair and reasonable that before using an officer's name as mine is used in the above, in a matter as serious as proffering charges against a brother officer, that the Editor of a service Journal should use every means of discovering the truth. Did you use such means in the present case? I pronounce...the whole statement as a tissue of falsehoods. I have not prepared...anything...against Admiral Schley, and, therefore, your mean...statement, is a distinct falsehood...Now, Mr. Editor, let your readers have the name of your reliable correspondent who has written these falsehoods. Failing that you must assume the responsibility of having written them yourself...". Boldly penned and very good.
