Description:

ROBERT TREAT PAINE
(1731-1841) American jurist, member of the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence and first Attorney General of Massachusetts. A.L.S. with integral address leaf, 1p. 8vo., Boston, July 2, 1789 to ''Major John McLellen, Esqr. at Woodstock'' asking him to collect a sum of money from ''Jacob Lerman now living as I suppose in Woodstock..." which had been due to Paine: "...from before the War..." Paine encloses the note for the money due (not present), and asks McClellen to let him know by way of Major Morgan: "whether the man is likely to pay it soon, what his Circumstances are, & any thing else that you may think proper to communicate..." Some slight contemporary brushing of the ink in Paine''s first name, otherwise boldly penned and fine.
