Description:

ROBERT TREAT PAINE, JR.
A copy of the Sept. 14, 1799 issue of the ‘Exeter Federal Miscellany', 4pp., printing a speech by ROBERT TREATE PAINE, JR. who, in 1799 was still using his given name of ‘Thomas Paine'. Paine (1773-1811) was a poet and editor born ‘Thomas Paine', but changed his name in 1801 as tribute to his older brother and to differentiate himself from the revolutionary pamphleteer Thomas Paine, who had become unpopular at the time. Paine, Jr. published a miscellany of writings but is best remembered for his patriotic songs such as ‘Adams and Liberty,' also known as the ‘Boston Patriotic Song' at the time of publication. Our speech is titled ‘AN ORATION WRITTEN AT THE REQUEST OF THE YOUNG MEN OF BOSTON, AND DELIVERED, JULY 17TH, 1799, IN COMMEMORATION OF THE DISSOLUTION OF THE TREATIES, AND CONSULAR CONVENTION, BETWEEN FRANCE AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and was delivered to the Young Men of Boston one year into the Quasi-War with France. Paine declares that while the ‘FOURTH OF JULY will be celebrated by our latest posterity as the splendid era of our national glory...the SEVENTH will be venerated as the dignified epoch of our American character....The one annihilated our colonial submission to a powerful, avowed and determined foe; - the other emancipated us from the oppressive friendship of an ambitious, malignant, treacherous ally…' The paper exhibits toning, edge wear and scattered foxing, but overall very good.
