Description:

ROBERT TOWNSEND''S "METEOR MAN" COSTUME
Hollywood has long had a love affair with the Superhero. In fact, Superman, Batman and their contemporaries are enjoying a resurgence in popularity at the Box Office. But the roles of superheroes and heroines have been historically reserved by Hollywood for lead actors who are other-than-ethnic. Comedian Robert Townsend broke that glass ceiling with a single bound as ''The Meteor Man'' in the 1993 cult classic co-starring James Earl Jones, Eddie Griffin and Don Cheadle. While tongue and cheek, ''Meteor Man'' was among the first comic-book heroes portrayed by an African-American, a precedent soon followed by Wesley Snipes (Blade), Halle Berry (Catwoman) Sam S. Jackson (Nick Fury), among others. Robert Townsend/Meteor Man''s signature coat is an off-white linen that is plainly seen in the film''s key scene and displays the handiwork of F/X technicians whose skills transformed Townsend''s character from a meek schoolteacher to ''The Meteor Man'', responsible for saving Washington D.C. from evil street gangs. Also included is Townsend''s matching shirt with a breakaway back for lightning-quick costume changes.
