Description:

ROBERT STROUD
(1890 - 1963) "The Bird Man of Alcatraz", imprisoned for the murder of a man in Juneau and a prison guard, Stroud made his life's work while incarcerated the befriending and study of birds and became a widely-respected ornithologist in the process. A.L.S., signed at the top and with prisoner number ath the conclusion, 1p. 4to., Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, Oct. 14, 1946, in pencil to his sister, in part: "...Book sales are pretty good, and I think they will be better soon. You don't want to faint when you see this printing. It is not a job that I like to do, but I've done a lot of it in the last month - more than a hundred thousand words of the best writing I've ever done in my life, and I've done a lot of good writing... I am glad your chickens are still doing well. They turned out to be a pretty good investment. If they are too big to eat all at once, you can put part of them in a can…" The book referred to here is likely "Stroud's Digest on the Diseases of Birds", published in 1943 and based on his experiments with birds while in prison. Very good.
