Description:

ROBERT STROUD(1890 - 1963) "The Bird Man of Alcatraz", imprisoned for the murder of a man in Juneau and a prison guard, Stroud made his life's work while incarcerated the befriending and study of birds and became a widely-respected ornithologist in the process. Fine content T.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Leavenworth Prison, Aug. 26, 1937 to a friend, in small part: "...I have never kept finches...I started from a first-cross male it was impossible to get hens in the third generation from this finch canary cross...I am still experimenting on that color-feeding process. Actually, I will never be a breeder of show birds. I am too much of an experimenter to breed standard types. I am always striving for the unusual...I did not intend to raise many birds this year...We have had the best breeding weather this year...". Much more ornithological content. A few ages spots and light wear, else very good.
