Robert Stroud 1890-1963 'The Bird Man of Alcatraz", imprisoned for the murder of a man in Juneau and a prison guard, Stroud made his lifes work while incarcerated the befriending and study of birds and became a widely-respected ornithologist in the process. A.L.S. from prison signed twice, 1+pp. 4to., Alcatraz Feb. 14, 1949, to a relative. Stroud d a planned meeting with a lawyer, the bad weather around San Francisco, and adds a touching anecdote about a girl He knew when young. In part: "...She was six years old at the time... [1] bought some pop corn balls [for her]... when I was under sentence of death or shortly after my commutation... Mother gave her my address... her father found out about it... [he] forbade her to ever write to me again.'. she should have told him where to go... " Fine condition.
