Description:

ROBERT SERVATIUS
(1894 - 1983) German lawyer, known for his defense of Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg including Fritz Sauckel, Karl Brandt, and Paul Pleiger. He also defended Adolf Eichmann at his trial in Israel in 1961. Great content T.L.S while at Nuremberg, 2pp. 4to. December 7, 1945, to the General Secretary of the International Military Tribunal regarding the treatment of members of the defense council. In part: '...I regret being obliged to submit to the Tribunal the following...On December 7th leaving the mess where the defense counsels are served I was stopped by a guard who ordered me in a rough tone to return and shut the door leading to the court I just came through...I was not aware to have left open the door...He threatened me and forced me to turn back...I observed a few soldiers and a German girl standing near the open door. I shouted to the girl to shut the door and was then allowed to move. This was an act which I leave to the Tribunal to appreciate. But I use the occasion to direct the attention to the court to the fact that the same soldier with the consent of his superior threatened to bash his rifle on my head three weeks ago as I refused his order to wash up the dishes used by myself. It is also a fact that all counsels are forbidden to use the main floor of the mess building...I am sorry to declare that I see in this particulars only the result of the general way in which the counsels of the defense are given board, a way which is in my opinion not only inconsistent with the standing of a lawyer but as well as against the reputation of the Tribunal. There have been many complaints brought but little relief...' More good content. Both pages mounted to larger sheets, one of which features a T.L.S. by William L. Mitchell, the General Secretary of the International Military Tribunal, transmitting the letter to his superiors. Slightly toned overall good condition.
