ROBERT S. RIPLEY
(1823 - 1887) Confederate brigadier general who commanded Forts Moultrie and Sumter, later led a brigade at Antietam and joined Johnston at war's end. Scarce war-date A.L.S. "RS Ripley B Genl" 1p. 4to., Charleston, Jan. 20, 1865 to the Assistant Adjutant General in Montgomery: "I have the honor to enclose here with a letter to the Adjut Inspr Genl, requesting that when my leave of absence expires I may not be ordered to the command of Gen. G. T. Beauregard. I have to request that it may be forwarded to its destination". Fortunately, Beauregard would be replaced by Joseph E. Johnston and Ripley would leave Charleston several weeks later with the latter general. Usual folds, light soiling, else very good.

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made.
