Description:

ROBERT OPPENHEIMER, ENRICO FERMI, AND OTHER MANHATTAN PROJECT PHYSICISTS
A fabulous association signed book signed by two of the world's most important nuclear physicists, ENRICO FERMI and J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER, both placing their signatures on the piece in 1946, the year after Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed by atomic bombs which were largely created through their efforts. The book is 'Atomic Energy for Military Purposes - The Official Report on the Development of the Atomic Bomb Under the Auspices of the United States Government' by Henry DeWolf Smith, Chairman of the Department of Physics at Princeton University and written at the request of Gen. Leslie Groves, who headed the 'Manhattan Project' (Princeton: Princeton University Press), 1945. 264pp. 8vo. in burnt orange cloth with brown printed title on spine. Rubbing to edges of covers, some water spots on front cover, contents very good. The book is signed on the half-title page by ENRICO FERMI (1901-1954), creator of the world's first nuclear reactor and the 'architect of the atomic bomb'; J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER (1904-1967), wartime head of the Los Alamos Laboratory and among those who are credited with being the 'father of the atomic bomb' for his role in the Manhattan Project; SAMUEL K. ALLISON (1900-1965), nuclear physicist who served on Fermi's team in Chicago, at Los Alamos, and who counted-down the clock at the Trinity test explosion; KENNETH T. BAINBRIDGE (1904-1996), Director of the Manhattan Project's Trinity nuclear test, after which he remarked to Oppenheimer: 'Now we are all sons of bitches'; and GEORGE KISTIAKOWSY (1900-1982), physicist placed in charge of X Division, which was responsible for the development of the explosive lenses necessary for an implosion-type nuclear weapon, ie: 'Fat Man'. The front flyleaf bears the ownership stamp of Manhattan Project scientist Laurence Cherry, designer of the detonation system used on 'Fat Man', along with his ownership notation and the date and place of purchase: 'Purchased 1946 at Los Alamos, N. Mex.' An important association of the leading world-changing Manhattan Project scientists.
