Description:

(1734 - 1806) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, financier and politician. Morris was instrumental in the financing of Washington's armies, and was later financially ruined through his speculation in western lands. Fine association partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong folio, Philadelphia, April 18, 1795, granting one share of the North American Land Company to Dr. Enoch Edwards, for a payment of six dollars. Morris signs boldly in black ink at the conclusion, with a secretary countersigning. Docketed at the left edge, signature shows a faint ink transfer where Morris' signature on another document has bled through the page, matted in red and mounted in a wood frame, very good overall. ENOCH EDWARDS (1751-1802) was a prominent Philadelphia physician and a leading Patriot during the American Revolution, as well as a signatory of the Philadelphia Constitution of 1790. He served as George Washington's attending physician during the Revolution, and was a friend and correspondent of Benjamin Rush, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson is though to have completed his first draft of the Declaration of Independence while a guest at Edwards' estate.
