Description:

(ROBERT MORRIS) THOMAS MIFFLIN
(1744 - 1800) American Revolutionary officer, President of the Continental Congress, major general, and member of the Constitutional Convention. Very fine content partly-printed D.S. as governor of Pennsylvania, 1p. folio on vellum, Philadelphia, May 6, 1794, a land certificate for "...a certain tract of land called 'Germantown' situate in Upper bald Eagle Township Mifflin County... containing four hundred thirty three acres... & allowance of six pr Cent for Roads... ". Morris had paid "the sum of One pound ten shillings & four pence lawful money... " for the tract, one of thousands that he purchased between 1791 and 1798. He was still riding quite high in 1794 having recently sold off an enormous tract in upstate New York to the Holland Land Company. However, Morris was purchasing as fast as he could sell, acquiring lands in the District of Columbia and millions of acres in the trans-Appalachian West. His land empire collapsed when an expected loan from the Netherlands failed to materialize due to the Napoleonic Wars. The European conflict also slowed migration to North America causing the value of his vast holdings to plummet. He landed in debtor's prison in February 1798. Document countersigned by ALEXANDER JAMES DALLAS. Light toning along usual folds, paper seals intact, else fine condition. Matted and framed to reveal both recto and verso. Not examined out of frame.
