Description:

(1822 – 1863) Confederate Colonel, who also served as a Confederate States Senator for Missouri. Died in 1863 after catching malaria while defending Vicksburg. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Richmond, Virginia, April 28, 1863, to Col. R.L.T. Beale. In part: ‘...I learn that Mr. Henry B. Richards a private in your regiment desires a transfer to the Missouri forces...I have been well acquainted for some years with Mr. Richards and that I know him to be a citizen of Missouri...At home and in the army his character was always that of an honorable gentleman and gallant soldier...He came with me to Virginia, but only on a...visit...In all probability the troops across the Mississippi will proceed this summer to Missouri...Could you advise this transfer to the commanding general...'. The verso bears three endorsements, including that of Col. R.L.T. Beale, agreeing that Mr. Richards should be granted his transfer request. Heavy foxing, though the text is still clear, with a few trivial holes at mailing folds.
