(Robert Emmet 1778-1803 Irish nationalist with the United Irishmen, He planned an abortive uprising to coincide with the French invasion of England, but poor planning and treachery led to his arrest and hanging. Intriguing A.M s. 19pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but probably ca. 1850] Written in Irish, the manuscript is a partial text of Emmet's famous speech from the dock prior to his sentencing, and includes exchanges with prosecutor Lord Norbury. In part: "...perhaps it is part of harsh authority to bend and humiliate the mind of a man as you wish, down to the shame of the scaffold. . filthy lying accusations against me... Does the death sentence... also condemn my tongue to silence my avarice was to stand among those who would free my country My country was my heart's love. ..free my country from the conqueror's yoke and the pitiless tyrant... put her standing free of any power on earth...." More fine content, with references to his alignment with the French. some soiling, chip on one page affects a few words of text. An excellent, important document.
