Description:

ROBERT E. RODES
(1829-1864) Confederate who led Jackson's devastating surprise attack at Chancellorsville, fought under Ewell at Gettysburg and was killed at Third Winchester. Rare signed endorsement ‘R. E. Rodes' in black ink on the verso of a very interesting partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., Richmond, July 15, 1862, an ‘Army of the Confederate States Certificate of Disability for Discharge' for Alabama private William H. Nix, filled out to explain the nature of the soldier's wound. In part: ‘Private Nix received a gunshot wound in his left wrist in the Battle of Gaines' [Mill, June 27, 1862] in Va…' Nix's company commander, a Capt. Eugene Blackford, signs below this statement. The following section has been completed and signed by a surgeon in Richmond, in part: ‘...find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of an amputation of the left arm necessary as a consequence of a gunshot wound through his left wrist. He will in my opinion be disabled for earning a subsistence by manual labor.' Rodes' endorsement discharges Nix from the service, and he adds his rank ‘Brig Gen' in black ink beneath his signature. Ragged and toned at the top edge from Rodes' signature, shows original mailing folds, else very good.
