Description:

ROBERT E. LEE
War-date A.E.S., 3.25 x 2.75 in., 'Hd. Qrs.' [n.p., likely before Petersburg], Sep. 8, 1864. In full: 'Resp'y returned. I think I think it better to assign this brigade to the Tennessee brigade under Archer & take from Archer the Virginians, & assign the latter to duty at Chafins Bluff for the present - R. E. Lee Genl.' Mounted, some light glue show-through, with glue stains on the mounting card, else very good. A few weeks later, on Sep. 30, 1864, there would be a battle at Fort Harrison or Chaffin's Farm, Virginia. Lee had lost Fort Harrison the previous day, and led a strong counterattack, but was beaten off by the Federal forces. The battle ended major Federal attempts against Richmond from north of the James River, and the Confederates constructed new outer works between the Fort Harrison line and Richmond, while the Federals built and manned siege lines east of the Confederate capital.
