Description:

ROBERT E. LEE AND ROBERT S. GARNETT
A great association piece, the signatures with ranks of ROBERT E. LEE (1807-1870) Confederate General and commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, arguably the most brilliant commander of field armies in American history, penned just beside that of ROBERT S. GARNETT (1819-1861), a U.S. Army career officer, later a Confederate brigadier general and adjutant to Robert E. Lee. He would be killed during an engagement near Corrick's Ford on July 13, making him the first general officer killed during the Civil War. This 7 x 3.5 sheet was apparently cut from a July 7, 1853 document signed by Garnett. It was then submitted to Lee who approved it, and then to future Union Gen. JOSEPH G. TOTTEN (1788-1864), a U.S. Army officer who fought in the War of 1812, later serving as Chief of Engineers. All three men were at the time at West Point where Lee was Superintendent, Garnett was Commander of the Corps of Cadets, and Totten was teaching. Fine condition, simply framed in wood. One of the best associations we've seen.
