Description:
Robert B. Rhett, Jr. Editor of the secessionist newspaper, the Charleston Mercury. A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Walterboro, Oct. 22, 1856 to John Heart describing Rhett's motivation. In part: In going into the Paper, my object would be, not to use it as a stepping stone to political consequence. I am not fitted for the public life of the assembly, and have seen enough of it I have no inclination to fly in the face of public opinion, or to cram distasteful facts and arguments down the people's throats. One chip at blank top margin, a blank 2.5in x 5 portion removed at bottom of last page, not affecting text. Good content!
