Description:

RICHARD STRAUSS
(1864 - 1949) German composer of fifteen operas, including Salome, Der Rosenkavalier and Also Sprach Zarathustra. A fine group of three T.L.S. to Hugo Gruters, Director of the Bonn Gesangverein. In the first, 1p., 4to., Berlin, March 11, 1907, in German, Strauss insists he cannot commit himself for a winter concert in Bonn due to a possible two-month trip to America. Strauss also informs Gruters that his rates for a concert are 1,000 DM, and that is would be increased to 1,200 marks if there is a public rehearsal. In the second T.L.S. 1p., 4to., "Bad Nauheim", "25. 6. 07.", in German, Strauss discusses the program in detail, suggesting that Gruters himself conduct the Wandrers Sturmleid since he is more familiar with the chorus. Additionally, due to the orchestra's size, Strauss believes it would be better to replace the Guntram overture with his famous Dance of Salome. In the third T.L.S., 1p., 4to., Berlin, Oct. 26, 1907, Strauss confirms the concert's details, repeating his suggestion about how to conduct the Sturmlied: "...The orchestra is a more easily flexible material and easy to mold to one's individual wishes in one to two rehearsals...". Strauss is also delighted to hear that an orchestra of 100 is available for the Domestica and the Dance of Salome. Fine condition, worthy of further research.
