Description:

RICHARD S. EWELL
(1817 - 1872) Confederate lieutenant general who fought in the war from Bull Run to Appomattox, he lost a leg at Groveton and was strapped in his saddle to lead his men into Pennsylvania and at Gettysburg. Especially rare war-date A.D.S. "R. S. Ewell Lieut. Genl. C. S. Army", 1p. 4to., Richmond, Aug. 30, 1864, in full: "I wish to testify to the bravery and zeal of Norman Smith for a long time Private in the Black Horse company but attached as Scout & Guide to my Head Quarters - Lieut. in Mosby's command when killed in action - one of many sons of whom Fauquier may well be proud...". Very fine condition and ideal for presentation. This document was removed from an album originally owned by Austin Smith, son of Virginia governor and C.S.A. Major General William "Extra Billy" Smith. This book was partly filled with autographs by Austin, but following his death in action at Gaines Mill, his family circulated the book to be signed by prominent people in his memory. Here, Ewell remarks on Norman Smith, likely a brother. The book Mosby's Rangers makes dozens of references to Norman Smith throughout.
