Description:

RICHARD RUSH
(1780 - 1859) American politician, Attorney General (1814-17) and Secretary of State (1817) who helped devise the Monroe Doctrine. A.L.S., 6pp. 4to., Washington, D.C., June 3, 1826, to an unnamed correspondent, likely an accountant or other financial representative. Rush transmits a payment for taxes owed on his land holdings for the years 1824 and 1825, meanwhile complaining about the amount he owes, in small part: "...This annual payment of taxes, and to so large an amount, on lands utterly unproductive to me, I feel to be very burdensome, and I have at length come to the conclusion that I cannot bear it longer..." He goes on to discuss his plans for selling much of his land, and offers his correspondent commission if he can facilitate such a sale. Rush signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with a clean horizontal split thereto, else very good.
