Description:

RICHARD NIXON WHITTIER COLLEGE TWICE-SIGNED 1933 YEARBOOK
RICHARD NIXON (1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. A superb signed piece, the 1933 "Acropolis" yearbook issued by Whittier College signed twice by junior (and future president) Richard Nixon. This copy, originally owned by popular student Catherine Nanney. Page 13 bears a 1 3/4" sq. chest, up photo of the 20 year-old Nixon in a suit, above which he has written: "I'm sorry I didn't get those society articles in better. I'll try to do better next time. The way your mother is 'behind us students', I hope to know you better next year. Dick Nixon". Nixon signs a slightly small portrait of himself "Dick Nixon" on page 47 as a member of the "Orthogonian Society". Ends of spine and corners a bit worn, gilt printing on covers less so, contents are very fine and overall fine. With copies of correspondence between Nixon as vice president and Nanney's brother. As a freshman at Whittier College Nixon helped organize the Orthogonians, a men's club in sharp contrast to the existing Franklins. "Orthogonian" meant "Square Shooters," Nixon explained in his memoirs; and in the college yearbook, Franklins were pictured in tuxedos while Orthogonians wore open-necked shirts, as befitted what Nixon termed "athletes and men who were working their way through school." Nixon's school years were painfully shy...and angry, leading many to believe that his experiences at Whittier made him the controversial president he ultimately became.
