Description:

RICHARD NIXON 1972 CHINA TRIP DOCUMENT GROUPING
A very rare official White House Staff schedule from President Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China, an important strategic and diplomatic overture that marked the resumption of harmonious relations between the United States and China. The schedule, 104pp. 3 1/2" x 6", is titled: "Detailed Schedule Visit of Richard Nixon President of the United States of America to the People's Republic of China February 1971". It lists every person in the presidents' entourage, vehicle and room assignments, detailed flight information and planned activities, cultural events and trips to other Chinese cities planned for the guests, and so on, with a separate section added for Mrs. Nixon's schedule. Also included in the lot is a fold-out "Tourist Map of Beijing", an unopened pair of decks of cards in a case, the cards bearing Nixon's name, "Air Force One" and an image of the aircraft, and two books of White House matches with Nixon's name imprinted thereon. Fine condition. The seven-day official visit was the first time a U.S. president had visited the PRC; Nixon's arrival in Beijing ended 25 years of no communication, nor diplomatic ties, between the two countries and was the key step in normalizing relations between the U.S. and China. From the estate of Cmdr. Ronald L. Jackson (1928-1990). Jackson, a Navy officer, was tasked with supervising the planning and implementation of reciprocal state dinners, the operation of the White House Mess and food service at Camp David and aboard Air Force One, and travelled everywhere with Presidents Johnson through George H. Bush.
