(1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. T.L.S. on his personal letterhead with holograph salutation and lengthy holograph postscript, 1p. 4to., San Clemente, Dec. 15, 1975 to a friend in New York expressing his thanks for support over the years and adding: "...Only during difficult periods does one learn who his real friends are. I am grateful you have always been in that group...". In the postscript Nixon warmly expresses his and Mrs. Nixon's wishes for Christmas and the coming New Year. The lot also includes: ROSE MARY WOODS (1917-2005) Secretary to Richard Nixon who also served as his "gatekeeper" and explained away the infamous "18 minute gap" in a crucial Watergate tape. T.L.S. "Rose Mary" on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, July 26, 1973 to one of her boss' closest supporters: "...I have no doubt whatsoever of the outcome of this disgraceful 'Watergate' affair...". Two pieces, fine.
