Description:

(1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Rare signed yearbook from Fullerton Union High School, 154pp. 8 x 10.75 in., ca. 1928, signed by Nixon in pencil when he was just a sophomore above an image of him with the school's 'Forensics' club - similar to a modern day debate team. The passage beneath the image gives '...special mention of Richard Nixon, the high school representative in the National Oratorical Contest on the Constitution...'. The remainder of the book, particularly the first and final pages, are signed sporadically by his high school classmates. Very good condition. Nixon would be hailed for his fantastic oratory abilities throughout his political career, though ironically, he received straight C's during his high school public speaking courses, called by his teacher 'a serious shy boy' who was clearly 'not a born speaker.' Yet through working doggedly to write out speeches in the forensic team, his coach later admitted he 'overcame his honest humility and became a pretty good speaker'. Both years at the school, he entered oratorical contests extolling the virtues of the U.S. Constitution, and the speeches he wrote here gave the first hints of his emerging views on politics and government. A fascinating relic from the earliest political years of one of America's most controversial presidents.
