Description:

RICHARD M. NIXON
(1913 - 1994) 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. Nixon's second term ended early when he became the only president to resign from office, following the Watergate scandal. Before Watergate, in an amazing turn of events, President Nixon took a dramatic first step toward normalizing relations with the communist People's Republic of China (PRC) by announcing on live television on July 15, 1971, that he would visit China the following year. The week-long visit, from February 21 to 28, 1972, allowed the American public to view images of China for the first time in over two decades. It was the first time a U.S. president had visited the PRC. Nixon's arrival in Beijing ended 25 years of no communication or diplomatic ties between the two countries and was the key step in normalizing relations between the U.S. and the PRC. T.L.S. ‘R N' as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, July 26, 1971, to the Honorable George D. Aiken, thanking him for his support in the continuing efforts to seek a new relationship with the People's Republic of China, written just after Nixon announced his 1972 visit to China. Lightly toned, very good.
