Description:

RICHARD M. NIXON
Fine content T.L.S. as President, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 11, 1972, on White House letterhead to Republican Sen. John G. Tower. In part: "...It was most encouraging to learn of your forceful expression of support for the peace proposals I presented to the Nation...Acceptance of these proposals...will bring an end to the killing, a return of our prisoners of war, a withdrawal of all forces with honor, and continued progress toward peace for all countries...". On Jan. 25, 1972, Nixon put forth an eight-point peace proposal for Vietnam that was rejected by Hanoi. In the months following, the Nixon administration ramped up heavy bombings in North Vietnam in response. John G. Tower (1925-1991) supported Johnson on his efforts to end the Vietnam War, but ironically aided Nixon during his campaign's attempt to sabotage the 1968 Paris Peace Accords which could have ended the war. Signed with his typical encircled initials. Light showthrough from rubber receiving stamp at right, very good.
