RICHARD M. NIXON (1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Scarce, early T.L.S. "Dick" on his House of Representative letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 23, 1948 to Charles G. Cooper of the Los Angeles Republican Central Committee. In part: "...It was too bad the Barcome affair caused so much dissension and I hope that now that it is over with, that everyone will get down to work...the Wallace crowd...is playing right into our hands...we never know what will happen between now and election time...I was glad you worked out the chairman deal...with Roy Day...we settle the Whittier Dam issue..." Folds, else very good. Henry A. Wallace was the presidential nominee of the revived Progressive Party in the 1948 presidential election. He strongly supported New Deal liberalism and sought conciliation with the Soviet Union. Incumbent President Harry S. Truman, the Democratic nominee, defeated Republican Governor Thomas E. Dewey.
