Description:

RICHARD M. NIXON
(1913 - 1994) 37th President of the United States who reopened diplomatic ties with China and the USSR, resigned in 1974 due to the Watergate Scandal. Lot of three T.L.S.s (one autopen), each signed 'Dick', 1p. 4to., 1959, 1961 and 1964, all to a fellow attorney who served with Nixon in the Navy during World War II. In the 1959 letter (autopen signature), on Vice Presidential letterhead, Nixon mentions the Republican defeat by Kennedy in the elections, stressing: 'the absolute necessity of getting across to the great majority of Americans that Republican philosophy and principles are basically forward-looking and progressive...a serious lack of communication with people in all walks of life. Usually it is a case of our doing better for the people...' Nixon's 1961 letter, also on Vice Presidential letterhead, is dated January 19, 1961 - one day before leaving office. He writes: '...closing an office after fourteen years of public service is a tremendous undertaking...my plans for the future are not yet firm...' The last letter, on his legal letterhead in 1964, declines to give a speech: '...[I am] on the campaign trail on behalf of Republican candidates throughout the country...' The letters have file holes at the top but are otherwise fine.
