(1819 - 1893) Confederate brigadier general and U.S. Congressman. An able commander of Virginia cavalry, his forces intercepted Ulric Dahlgren and revealed the Davis assassination plot, participated in hard fighting at Gettysburg's East Cavalry Field, and captured two Union flags at the Second Battle of Ream's Station. Wounded and captured at Appomattox. Fine content A.L.S. 'R.L.T. Beale', 2pp. 4to., Hague, April 9, 1887, to Charles C. Jones Jr. (1819-1893), historian and Mayor of Savannah during the war, and his committee regarding an invitation to a celebration of Memorial Day. In part: '...In acknowledging your invitation to be with you on memorial day at a reunion of old comrades in your beautiful city. Memory recalls on this anniversary of fateful Appomattox, in vivid... the last charge made on the battlefields...I may not be with you...in the cause that was lost. [It] may be dead to those who follow, and that the sheen of their glory may brighten a page of our country's history of which in the latest[?] of years the 'gray' and the 'blue' shall be equally shared[?]...'
