Description:

(1819 - 1893) Confederate brigadier general and U.S. Congressman. An able commander of Virginia cavalry, his forces intercepted Ulric Dahlgren and revealed the Davis assassination plot, participated in hard fighting at Gettysburg's East Cavalry Field, and captured two Union flags at the Second Battle of Ream's Station. Wounded and captured at Appomattox. Rare, very lengthy A.E.S. as "Col. Cmg." on the verso of a fine content A.D.S. by Capt. WILLIAM A. OLIVER, Co. F, 9th Va. Cav. Oliver refers to a horse captured in the attack on Col. Ulric Dahlgren's cavalry. In part: "...I hereby certify the Private P. E. Lipscomb...now has in his possession a bay mare supposed to have been captured from a portion of Kilpatrick's command in his last raid towards Richmond [he] lost a horse of more value than the above-mentioned one...I respectfully but earnestly request that he be allowed to keep this horse as some recompense for the one lost..." On Mar. 31, Beale pens an 18-line response, in part: "This horse could not have belonged to Kilpatrick's command. He was captured by Lipscomb in Gloucester who was scouting for me [sic], whilst I was in Hannover close upon Kilpatricks' tracks...this soldier lost a fine horse last fall in Culpeper, and surely went on duty as a scout, he captured one, he has good claim to hold him...I earnestly recommend he not be dismounted just at the beginning of a campaign..." Also endorsed by C.S.A. Major Gen. FITZHUGH LEE (1835-1905) who adds his own A.E.S. beneath that of Beale's, Apr. 4, 1864: "...Private Lipscomb will be allowed to keep the horse...until a decision is had on the subject..." Some short fold splits, one affecting Lee's endorsement, else very good.
