Description:

(1821-1879) Career U.S. Army officer who served as a lieutenant general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. His forces held the "Bloody Lane" at Antietam, and penetrated Union lines on Cemetary Ridge at Gettysburg. Excellent content A.L.S. "R.H. Anderson", 1p. 8vo., "Head Qu. Anderson's Corps", Feb. 20, 1864, to an unnamed fellow general, in part: "I desire to have at once a free and candid expression of the feeling of the troops under your command towards the proposed measure of employing in the National service such slaves as may volunteer to take up arms in consideration of receiving their freedom after the close of the war. If you are satisfied that you know their feeling upon this subject a reference will not be necessary, but in case you have any doubt, refer the question to them in such a way as will soonest obtain a prompt ... decided answer." He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Lt. Genl." Shows original mailing folds, with two small splits thereto repaired on the verso, else very good. At the very end of the war, in March of 1865, the Confederate Congress passed a bill allowing slaves to join the army. Two companies were raised in anticipation of the final defense of Richmond, but these lacked arms and uniforms, and never saw combat.
