Description:

RICHARD GALE
(1896 - 1982) British general who served in both world wars. In World War II he served with 1st Parachute Brigade and then the 6th Airborne Division during the invasion of Normandy and Operation Tonga, the taking of Pegasus Bridge. Good content A.L.S. as Deputy Supreme Commander on his letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Feb. 1, 1959, to novelist Dennis Wheatley. In part: ‘...events entirely hindered my coming over to London...Thank you so much for the charming autographed copy of your book...How strange it is to see the development of Europe - - no one, I am sure, in those far off war-days could have foreseen just the position we are in now...in the heat of war the aim, which is quite correctly the defeat of the enemy armed forces and their national will to fight, neglects the ultimate political aim – which is to see a balance of power which will be to the mutual benefit of the world as a whole – both victors and vanquished. Perhaps this is ‘utopia' but as the late Earl Haig said ‘Aim High'...' Tape at the left edge, else very good. With original holograph envelope cover.
