Description:

HENRY WOODHOUSE (1884 – 1970) Italian-born aviation writer, magazine publisher, investor, and collector. After serving four years for manslaughter, Woodhouse became a prominent promoter of civilian and military aviation, also publishing 'Flying' (still in publication today) and several other magazines. Later, Woodhouse became a prolific forger, creating forgeries of signers of the Declaration of Independence, as well as Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Alexander Graham Bell, Amelia Earhart, and many others whom he offered in his New York gallery. A collection of two T.L.S.s sent to aviator Richard E. Byrd offering advice for his upcoming expedition to the South Pole. The first T.L.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Oct. 1, 1928, reads in part: ‘...Am sending you in duplicate...(a) the photograph of Scott's tractor hauling sledges, (b) the photostats giving a table showing the climate at Framheim, McMurdoe Sound, Cape Adare...(c) photostats of Amundsen's Meteorological Record from Framheim...The Barrier may prove...to be better for you, as it proved better for Amundsen...Tomorrow I'll send you photos of the Ice Barrier...members of the Shackleton and Scott expeditions disagreed on the value of autos. But, of course, they only had those early types...' Signed at the conclusion. The second T.L.S., 2pp. 4to., New York, Oct. 2, 1928, reads in part: ‘...I told Admiral Chester what you told me about your main problems of finding the most suitable place to land on the Antarctic seaboard...The enclosed photos and maps [not included] are the outcome of our research...while they show clearly the conditions found by Amundsen, and that Amundsen's success was the direct result of using the Ice Barrier as the base...nevertheless Shackleton told me that he would not trust the Barrier with his base...' Woodhouse goes on to quote a discussion he had with Amundsen about the Barrier, ending his letter with sincere wishes for success, and signing at the conclusion. Both letters display light toning at the edges and some light chipping, else very good.
