842. JOSEPH J. REYNOLDS (1822-1899) Union brigadier general who repulsed the Confederates at Cheat Mountain and held that portion of West Virginia for the Union. He also served at Chattanooga and Chickamauga. A.L.S. on Dept. of Texas letterhead, 2pp. 4to., San Antonio, May 17, 1871 to Gen. O. E. Babcock in Washington. Reynolds states that he has forwarded a note from the President to a Capt. Barnes and "the International Rail Road". He recommends Barnes, and asks if the government intends to issue bonds to support a portion of the railroad "not beginning at the Red River. The Gov. will of course have to stick close to the law, but he will favor the road all he can...he appreciates its great benefit to the state..." Dampstained with a chip at lower-right, otherwise good. $75-100
