(REVOLUTIONARY WAR MUSTER ROLL)
War-date Manuscript D.S., 2pp. oblong legal folio, Hartford, [Conn.], Nov. 13, 1778, headed, "Return of the 1st Massachusetts Battalion of Foot Commanded by John Bailey" listing the disposition of the eight companies commanded by captains Maxwell, Darby, Allen (late), Burr, Drew, Warren, Alden, and Dunham of the 1st. Massachusetts Regiment, John Bailey commanding. Demarcated are the various types of officers - nineteen subcategories - in addition to the "Rank & File," who are categorized into: "For duty," "S[ick] Present," "S[ick] Absent," "on Comm[an]d," and on "Furlough." Excluding all officers, the total present & fit force numbers 265 of 405 men enlisted, with 235 men "Wanting." In all the regiment was at but 65% of full strength, not an uncommon situation. Six absent officers are individually named, with their reasons and locations. Col. Bailey, Maj. Peters, and Lt. Haywood are on furlough. Capt. Alden and Lt. Baker are on Command of the Light Infantry for 96 days, with twenty-one men, and Lt. Morton is on Command at Newtown Bridge for 50 days, with twelve men. Four men are absent "in his Excellencys Guard" more than likely serving as members of George Washington's life guard. Numerous other enlisted me are listed as absent in various locations, for instance, with the Paymaster General, butchering, with doctors, tending sick, waggoners, or on several guards. The 1st Massachusetts Battalion of Foot under Colonel John Bailey had responded to the Lexington Alarm of Apr. 19, 1775 and later saw action on Lake Champlain, Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, Monmouth and in the Battle of Rhode Island. Light uneven toning, some minor marginal wear, else very good condition.
