Description:

REVOLUTIONARY WAR MILITARY DRAFTSMAN'S WORKBOOK
Superb Revolutionary War era military draftsman's workbook, 42pp. 13" x 8 3/4" in American-bound full brown leather, ca. 1770, bearing within 19 intricately-executed sepia drawings which include illustrations of figures and uniformed soldiers in tri-cornered hats engaged in various military activities such as firing cannon and muskets, constructing fortifications, and so on. Some drawings include views of cityscapes with buildings in the background, and several drawings have yellow highlights added. The first three plates show different profiles of "Part of a Camp Intrenched, situated on an uneven ground", the next plate bearing detailed drawings of a gabion, sandbag, digging tools, a mantlet, fascine, and so on. Plates Five and Six show aerial views of a pentagonal fort in the center of a section of farm land showing outer trenches and approaches. Plate Seven offers a detailed illustration of defenses being dug and reinforced by soldiers with a side view of a sentry in a foxhole protected by gabions and sandbags. The next three plates show geometric side view for cannon and mortar emplacements, with Plate 11 showing a more heavily-constructed fort from the air. Plate 12 is captioned: "View of a Cavalier of the Trenches" and shows a tri-level approach to a heavily-defended trench, with the following plate showing four superbly-detailed images of a "Descent and Passage over a dry Ditch" showing entrances, exits, soldiers at work digging and placing sandbags and logs, etc. Plate 14 shows the same type of work, this time as the soldiers construct fortifications around and over a "Wet Ditch". Plates 15 and 16 again show aerial views of heavily-fortified forts, while Plate 17 shows four different scaling ladders. The last two drawings, highlighted in yellow, show some details of the pentagonal forts. Covers are a bit worn but contents are near fine and display beautifully! An important and most appealing Revolutionary War military drafting item, likely used for training purposes.
