Description:

REVOLUTIONARY WAR MEDICINE
WILLIAM BURNET (1730-1791) Physician born in Elizabeth, N.J., served as Surgeon-General for the Eastern District for the Continental Army. Fine medical content A.L.S.,1p. legal folio, Philadelphia, Dec. 20, 1780 to his wife Mary, in Newark, N.J., in part: "...I mentioned in a former Letter to you that Dr. Born had told me that he had some time ago a Patient with nearly the same symptoms you labor under & that he received no benefit from any thing he gave him, till at last the patient told the Doctor that he had a Tape Worm & of his own accord took a very [small] Quantity of the Floss of Steel three nights successfully which cured him at once. It may perhaps be worth while to try Steel, but I should hope that you would begin with a small dose not more than three or four grains of the filings of Steel or of the Limeture Marks rubbed very fine. If that should produce no bad effects you can try ten grams for a few nights. Who knows but it may be of service to you. Whether you have a worm or not of any Kind in your Stomach or Bowels it may strengthen & brace your Fibres in such a manner as to produce salutary Effects...". He then moves on to politics noting that "Congress is overrun with Business of every Kind. The State of our Finances embarrasses us more than any thing else - there is great harmony in the House. I hope all are engaged to promote the Public Good, there are many men of ability in the House who do Honor to the United States...". Expected folds, light dampstains otherwise fine condition.
