Description:

Privately-purchased Revolutionary War-era saber, 23.25 in. blade, 28.5 in. overall, likely of English or French origin, fitted with a squared brass handguard, pommel and backstrap with black leather-wrapped wood grip. The tang of the blade is secured at the pommel with a peened rivet, while the handguard is affixed to the pommel by means of a screw. The backstrap of the grip bears the incised mark "No 8" over the initial "K", likely an inventory mark. The ricasso of the blade is marked with the initials "P L", possibly those of the maker, while the reverse ricasso bears an indistinct mark within a circle, possibly depicting the head of a horse, partially obscured by the crossguard. Both sides of the blade bear deep fullers, running to within 5 in. of the tip. No scabbard is present. The blade shows patchy oxidation overall, with some minor resultant pitting, and with signs of sharpening. The leather of the grip is mummified and shows some cracking, with some dings to the brass components overall, else very good.
