Description:

A unique manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, [n.p.], 1795, titled 'Debenture of the Council for their Attendance at the General Assembly Oct Sessions AD 1795.' It bears the names and signatures of ten prominent colonial era Connecticut statesmen to be paid. Each signed under their respective names as having been paid, including: WILLIAM WILLIAMS (1731-1811) Delegate to the Continental Congress for Connecticut and signer of the Declaration of Independence; JEREMIAH WADSWORTH (1743-1804) Commissary General of the Continental Army; JOSEPH COOKE (1730-1816) Continental Army officer and twice delegate to the Congress of Confederation; JOHN TREADWELL (1745-1823) Member of the Congress of Confederation and Governor of Connecticut; WILLIAM HILLHOUSE (1728-1816) Continental Army officer, elected to the Continental Congress but chose not to attend; JAMES DAVENPORT (1758-1797) Revolutionary War veteran and later U.S Congressman from Connecticut; ROGER NEWBERRY (1735-1814) Continental Army general; HEMAN SWIFT (1733-1814) Continental Army general and later Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, known as 'General Washington's Colonel.'; THOMAS GROSVENOR (1744-1825) Connecticut judge and Revolutionary War veteran; and JOHNATHAN INGERSOLL (1747-1823) Lt. Governor of Connecticut. Tears at the fold have been repaired with tape on the verso, and minor soiling.

Shipping

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
