Description:

REVOLUTIONARY WAR CANNONBALL
Superb relic from the American War for Independence, a 9-pounder solid shot cannonball, circa 1770's. The projectile, made of cast iron, would have been shot from a 4.20 diameter smoothbore cannon, and was intended to smash through enemy ships, massed infantry, and fortifications. This cannonball has a raised horizontal seam mark, indicating that it was made by American and not British troops: by the start of the war, the British had perfected the casting together of the two ball halves, while the Americans had to save time by accepting lower standards. Heavy surface pitting and an untouched chocolate brown age patina, with some traces of dirt in the pits. A rare 9-pound cannonball!
