REVOLUTIONARY WAR ARCHIVE
A fantastic archive of over 50 documents from the Revolutionary War era, in all formats and relative to many subjects, with some written by prominent personalities and many others not identified and worthy of research. The archive emanates from the esteemed manuscript shop Goodspeed's of Boston and unless otherwise noted, condition is very good. Contains, in very small part: WILLIAM STEPHENS (1752-1819, judge appointed by Thomas Jefferson to take a seat on United States District Court, A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., 1804, to Joseph Clay, who conducted the impeachment proceedings against John Pickering in 1804, regarding farming and banking matters; NATHANIEL PENDLETON (1756-1821, Revolutionary War military officer, aide to Nathaniel Greene in the Southern campaigns, served as a second to Alexander Hamilton in his duel with Aaron Burr), A.L.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Placentia [?], Sept. 20, 1817, sending a check to American politician Archibald McIntyre; JEDEDIAH HUNTINGTON (1743-1818, Revolutionary War brigadier general who repulsed the raid on Danbury, and served on the courts martial of Charles Lee and Major Andre), A.L.S. 1p. 4to., New London, June 28, 1808, requesting a certificate of delivery, inlaid; NATHANIEL PEABODY (1742-1823, American Revolutionary patriot and militia general who served in the Rhode Island expedition, a delegate to the Continental Congress and a representative of New Hampshire in many conferences promoting the Revolutionary cause), A.D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., New Hampshire, 1787, a receipt; GOUVERNEUR MORRIS (1752-1816, American revolutionary, member of the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention, signer of the Constitution and creator of the terms dollar and cent), A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., New York, Nov. 26, 1838 regarding the financial matters of an estate; CALEB CUSHING (1800-1879, American lawyer and diplomat, opened China to American trade and arbitrated the "Alabama" claims), A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Newbury, Dec. 1833, regretting not acknowledging a letter along with two A.D.S. sight drafts dated 1770 and 1780; GEORGE M. DALLAS (1792-1864, Vice President of the United States), A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Boston, Apr. 18, 1837, regarding payment and mentioning a Mr. Clinton. Badly eroded at right edge; SAMUEL ELBERT (1740-1788, American politician from Georgia who fought in the Revolutionary War and promoted to Colonel in the Continental Army), the bottom right corner (only) of a partly-printed D.S., [n.p., n.d.], boldly signed, sunned; JACOB MORRIS (1755-1844, Aide to Generals Charles Lee and Sullivan in the Revolutionary War), A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Butternuts, Nov. 6, 1793, to Philip Van Rensselaer declining an invitation; JOSEPH BLACKWELL (1754-1826, Lieutenant in the 3rd Va. Regt. during the Revolutionary War), A.L.S. 1p. 4to., New York, July 21, 1792, an account of a soldier, long overdue, addressed to noted jurist Smith Thompson; JACOB READ (1752-1816, American patriot serving as a major in the South Carolina volunteers and spent four year as a British Prisoner at St. Augustine. Delegate to the Continental Congress and Federalist member of the Senate), legal A.D.S. 1p. 4to., Mar. 6, 1788 [?], a notice of examination, split at bottom left; WARD CHIPMAN (1754-1824, Governor of New Brunswick, Canada, a Tory in the Revolution), A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Boston, Oct. 18, 1817, thanking a gentleman for some books, ragged right margin and collector's sticker at top right; THOMPSON J. SKINNER (1752-1809, Massachusetts Senator), A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, Williams Town, Nov. 10, 1784, regarding some drafts and other minor governmental matters; WILLIAM TILGHMAN (1756-1827, American politician who, with his father, was a loyalist during the Revolution; became Justice of the Supreme Court after), manuscript D.S. 1p. legal folio, Philadelphia, June 24, 1817, a legal writ certifying the testimony of a witness; RUFUS PUTNAM (1738-1824, Officer in the French and Indian War, later a general in the Continental Army and Chief of Engineers of the Works of New York), partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Mar. 8, 1797, a letters patent. Loss at middle, linen backed for preservation, just good condition; BENJAMIN WALKER (1753-1818, Revolutionary War officer, aide-de-camp to both Baron von Steuben and George Washington), A.D.S. penned on the verso of a legal document about the rights of an heir, York, Mar. 12, 1788. Walker lists expenses and signs on Mar. 28, 1788. A 2" tear at bottom affects nothing. Along with the cut signatures of; RICHARD RUSH, ALBERT GALLATIN, OLIVER ELLSWORTH and a dozen signatures of Revolutionary War soldiers, to be researched, and more! Overall very good condition.

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling, shipping and insurance charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items are not shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arrange through the auction house.
