Description:

74. REVOLUTIONARY WAR ANECDOTE Amusing Revolutionary War anecdote, 3pp. 4to., [France, ca. 1782], in French, titled Moral & Literary Varieties - Adventure of an American Soldier. Clearly a piece intended for publication, this tale concerns an American soldier captured, tried and sentenced to hang by the British. Anticipating that his wife will receive his final letter to her three days hence, he informs her: "...I was hanged yesterday between eleven o'clock and noon. It seems that the weather was very nice...". Apparently, the tale continues with the soldier somehow escaping his fate and returning to find his wife re-married and having moved away. Misidentified by an earlier owner as being in the hand of Lafayette, set in a very early stand-up gilt frame. Very good, not examined out of frame. $200-300
