REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. MENTIONS JACKSON, FREEDOM RIDERS, AND THURGOOD MARSHALL
(1929-1968) Clergyman and civil rights leader who advocated nonviolent but active and massive confrontation in order to obtain rights for blacks. Excellent, historic content typed letter on his personal letterhead, 1p. 8 1/2" x 11", dated July 3, 1961 at Jackson, Mississippi and signed by King at the conclusion in blue ink. King writes to a Philip Reister of San Diego, in full: "This is just a note to acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 17. I have read your suggestions with care and I think they are well-stated. You are certainly on sound ground when you say that the people in Jackson have been falsely arrested. Something must definitely be done about this. I will be very happy to pass your idea on to Thurgood Marshall of the Legal Defense and Educational Fund of NAACP. He happens to be handling a good deal of the legal problems concerning the Freedom Rides. Thank you for taking the time to write, and thank you for your concern." The letter is accompanied by a retained copy of Reister''s original typed letter to King, dated June 17, and a typed reply from King''s secretary, Dora E. McDonald, dated June 21, acknowledging the receipt of Reister''s letter. The letter bears original folds, else very good. The Freedom Riders referenced in these letters were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses throughout the southern United States to protest institutional segregation of public buses. The activists faced violent opposition from local police and Ku Klux Klan members, with many being arrested at Jackson, the main destination and focal point of the protests, between May and August of 1961. This is clearly the situation to which King refers. Thurgood Marshall, of course, would later become the first African-American Supreme Court justice. Light mailing folds, otherwise in fine condition. An excellent document of a momentous event at the center of the Civil Rights Movement.
